Story

Over decades the North East has suffered some of the worst rates of smoking and smoking-related disease in England. Fresh, the UK’s first dedicated tobacco control programme, was set up to tackle these tragic statistics.

We have worked with Fresh since 2014, positioning them as the expert voice on tobacco control in the region and as leaders in tackling the cost of tobacco to the NHS, economy and communities in the North East.

Regional smoking rates have fallen from 29% of adults smoking in 2005 to 11% in 2023 – a 62% reduction and lower than the England average.

This behavioural change has been driven through above the line health harm campaigns which we have supported with on and offline media packages and social media content. We captured real people’s stories about how smoking has had an impact on their lives and their families. These stories kindly shared, show the real cost of smoking and why it is never too late to stop.

Smoking Survivors, was just one of the campaigns we supported, capturing and narrating through video the stories of those who have either survived a smoking-related illness or very sadly lost someone to smoking. Almost 50% of smokers who saw the Smoking Survivors campaign took action in either cutting down or making a quit attempt.
