Story

Like many historic market towns, Bishop Auckland was at an important moment in its evolution. Alongside an ambitious programme of regeneration, Durham County Council wanted to reconnect people with the town, celebrate its unique character and build confidence in its future.

Our approach began by listening. Through engagement with residents, businesses, councillors, local historians and community stakeholders, we uncovered the stories, values and ambitions that people shared about their town. Those insights formed the foundations of a brand strategy that reflected both Bishop Auckland’s distinctive past and its aspirations for the future.

The resulting identity combined a bold, confident visual language with authentic storytelling rooted in the people who make Bishop Auckland what it is today. Rather than relying on stock imagery, local residents, businesses and community champions became the faces of the campaign, creating a brand that felt genuine, inclusive and proudly local.

The identity was rolled out across the regeneration programme, including a dedicated website, public communications, newsletters, photography and marketing materials, providing a consistent platform for engagement and helping communicate progress throughout the town’s transformation.

More than a visual identity, the brand became a catalyst for bringing people together around a shared vision for Bishop Auckland. By celebrating its heritage while expressing confidence in its future, it created a stronger sense of place and provided a lasting platform to support regeneration, investment and community pride.
